No notes for slide. Largest is now University of Waterloo in Ontario Canada Next year the Coop program at Northeastern will 100 years old. Most of our customer base is from the 7000 or so students living in residence halls. That number has grown from 5800 4 or 5 years ago to just over 7000 currently. School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) = Night School Approx 3500 of the undergraduate student population would be out on coop or study abroad at any given time.
During the summer our student staff size drops to 10 – 12 experienced techs, then in summer we add about 10 new techs for training over the summer. We tend to have fewer Juniors and seniors because once they complete their sophomore year, they begin the 6 month Coop rotation.
Regardless of how much they like working at ResNet, what happens is local companies see what they can do and often offer jobs at pay rates we cannot compete with. Tier 1 suppport for cable tv Residence halls are rented out for the summer for conferences (democratic national convention). This fall we have a 50% increase in our physical plant that will include a small retail store. Training classes for anyone but focused on the Coop department. We’ll be working with them to determine what students would like personalized assistance with before they leave campus to go on Coop assignment. Looking back, we see that our case load has increased substantially over the past few years. This graph is cumulative but if you drill down into this data you’ll see that case volume has increased in 11 of the past 12 months versus the previous year and this year we will total over 2000 cases more than last year without a substantial increase in the on campus population.
So far driven only by services added and will continue as we add 30% more students and our store front. Even with no major virus outbreaks and a fairly steady student population our case load was increasing significantly as we added new services. Looking forward our on campus student population will be increasing by. Prior recruiting and training (when we only needed 4 o5 new hires per year) consisted of advertizing positions at Orientation Sessions.
We’d talk with a candidate, conduct a more detailed phone interview later and bring the new hires in a week before move in and train for 3 or 4 days. Clearly that wasn’t going to work anymore as we not only needed more student staff, we needed much more in depth training to teach what was needed to understand our additional procedures, techniclly support all our new services, and learn and utilize the new tools that we had developed. In order to reach our goals the first thing we needed to do was to revamp our hiring methods. Rather than advertize and wait for students to come to us, we took a proactive approach. We first crafted a letter for distribution that described the job and some of the benefits of working at ResNet. We then teamed with our Enrollment Management Department to target high school graduates enrolling at Northeastern in specific curriculums and solicited them directly in a mass mailing within a radius of up to 75 miles to create our pool of applicants. Typically this is computer science, the engineering disciplines, Management information systems etc.
We’re able to handle the initial response volume quickly by utilizing a short, scored phone questionnaire for our preliminary interview. Any of the full time staff can conduct the interview. The nice part of the score sheet is that it doesn’t take long and our initial rankings are primarily based solely on the score. We totem pole the rankings, call in the top 15 for personal interviews and keep going down the list until we have the number we’re looking for. We usually hire 1 or 2 more than we think we need. We have samples of the letter and scored phone interview.
We hope to attract a couple of students each year that have A+ certification because that is a requirement for them to work on hardware. We offer a pay premium for the certification and we’ll pay for the test if they pass it while they are working at ResNet.
We hire staff in the summer at a temporary summer rate of $10. To off set commuting costs and we usually train 3 days a week starting at the beginning of July. I believe it is far less effective to train during the year. The necessary attention cannot always be devoted to trainees during the year, the hours are irregular because of schedule conflicts or availability (we may be busy with customers, many people may have to perform portions of the training and in general it is far less efficient and therefore also more costly. We also may not be as certain where student stands because not working with student regularly. Used to hire at Orientation sessions and 1 year most were out of state and went home the following summer – short handed Participants learn from each other and each other’s questions Move in much better.
Students are nervous – but we’re feeling great knowing they are fully trained. Helps ensure at least 2 years of uninterrupted service.
